Midnight

8 – 30 August 2025 | Salon

Elektrohalle Rhomberg presents a new selection of works by the Viennese artist Max Freund. The exhibition, titled "Midnight," is dedicated to observing time and the everyday lighting situations that surround us, with a particular focus on the moment of midnight. This is a moment that supposedly stands for rest, where the night offers the possibility of experiencing a standstill.

For Freund, painting becomes the interface for a complex investigation of human conditions and perceptions. His pictures serve as points of reference, leading viewers into mysterious, magical worlds and making intimate moments visible. The integration of transience and the redefinitionof various (pictorial) materials form a central aspect of his work. In doing so, Freund weaves in narrative elements from literature and music—often visible in his titles, compositions, or contextual overlays.

The exhibition features a continuation of his already elaborate series "Figur im Park" (Figure in the Park), this time in monochromatic black, white, and grey tones. This is complemented by thenew series "Laterna Magica," which playfully references the historic projection device and workswith illusion, perspective, and visual narrative in a poetic way.
